Terminal text is rendered with ligatures

The latest version of iTerm2 (1.0.0.20130613) uses ligatures to render text in the terminal. This does not make very much sense in the context of a terminal, especially for monospace fonts.
This behavior is very distracting for a couple of reasons:
a) The text jumps around as the ligatures are rendered.
b) Because the cursor is still in the correct position, there is blank space between the cursor and the rendered text. (Try typing "fifififififififififi" to see this behavior.)
The previous version of iTerm2 (whatever was delivered via auto-upgrade in the beta channel) did not use ligatures to render text. I did not change my settings after upgrading.
I tested with the attached font (Menlo for Powerline).
What steps will reproduce the problem?
- Open a terminal window.
- Type characters that can be rendered with ligatures in whatever font you're using (for example, "fi").
What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I would expect no ligatures to be used; instead, text is rendered with ligatures.
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
iTerm 2 1.0.0.20130613, OS X 10.8.3.
