Selecting/pasting multi-line text should respect each lines actual width

When using iterm2 agaist a GNU screen session that has multiple windows, I often find myself copying and pasting from one window to another. While I can do this with keyboard shortcuts in screen, it's typically a lot easier to copy and paste with the mouse.
With iterm2, when I select text (default, not block mode) and paste, the pasted text has additional whitespace after the newlines in each line, to make up for the width of the terminal. It's as if it's doing block mode select for the entire width.
As an example.
The quick
brown fox jumped over the lazy dog
If I select the above two lines, and paste it, I pretty much get
"The quick \n"
"brown fox jumped over the lazy dog\n"
Putty does this properly and pasted text has each line the proper length. Can iterm behave like putty, or at least have an option allowing for that behavior.
Thanks
