Feature: side-by-side terminals

When I'm creating certain kinds of apps, I iTerm with 3 tabs: a shell running irb, a window executing "tail -f logfile" and a daemon, at least.
Currently, developing an app implies constant switching between the tabs of the project I'm working on. Sometimes just to check the output of tail or to restart the daemon if some output was printed.
To make matters worse, sometimes I'm working on more than one project like this And when I switch between tabs I must first check that I'm looking at the correct IRB session for the project I'm interested in.
It would be great if there could be a way to group terminal windows side-by-side.
Currently, this can be done by window switching, but you lose the logical grouping of the windows. It only adds some confusion.
Think of it as a split pane, but every split shows a different terminal session.
