Control session logging from the command line

Hi, it'd be great to have the ability to control (start/stop) the session logging from the command line (e.g. via some escape code).
Motivation for this is that I do tons of stuff I don't need logged, but then when I'm e.g. connecting to a production server, I'd like the logging to be started. So in .bashrc on that server, I'd send some escape code that'd start the logging.
Hand in hand with that it'd be useful to be able to somewhat control the session log filename (to e.g. insert the hostname of server I've connected to).
Thank you,
Jan
