LANG variables not exported correctly

What steps will reproduce the problem?
- start a new terminal
- run mcedit
- type characters "abcd"
What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I expect to see "abcd" instead i see "...."
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
the latest alpha10 released earlier today.

The lang variables that are exported by iTerm for UTF-8 mode cause some applications to break.
Specifically midnight commander breaks as it expect an ALL-Caps UTF-8 instead of a lowercase utf-8.
Opening up a terminal via the OS X "Terminal" application yields en_US.UTF-8 (All caps)
My current workaround is to unset all of the LC_* environment variables and update the LANG to be en_US.UTF-8 via my .bash_profile.
