box drawing characters end up rendered as letters

What steps will reproduce the problem?
- Try to use an ncurses application (dialog, weechat-curses, iftop) with TERM=xterm.
What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Line drawing characters now render as their ASCII counterparts rather than the characters from the VT100 alternate character set. Setting TERM=screen avoids the problem.
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Built from source (ee0faefd). Tried on both 10.6.8 and 10.7.4. A build I made from source on 2012-04-09 doesn't have the problem.
Please provide any additional information below.
I think this is related to the changes made to VT100Screen.m controlling switching between based on comments from the mosh people. Attached is the (lame) patch I applied to get line drawing to return. I realize this is probably not the right way to fix this.
