High resource usage and lag when switching to iTerm 2.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
- Open iTerm.
- Focus on another window/application.
- Switch focus to iTerm 2.
What is the expected output?
iTerm gains application focus cleanly, with minimal lag time.
What do you see instead?
Screen sometimes freezes for a few seconds, and spinning beachball when iTerm window selected for up ~10 seconds in some cases. This issue is intermittent, and iTerm normally very responsive and shows none of these issues. I have noticed this sometimes when I have a few ssh sessions open, am tailing some logs, switch over to Firefox for a while, then try to come back it just lags/spins for 10-15 seconds.
What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Build 1.0.0.20120123
OS 10.5.8
Macbook Pro, 2.2GHZ Core 2 Duo w/ 2GB DDR2.
Please provide any additional information below.
The only thing I can see of interest is the resources in Activity Monitor.
Mac Terminal clocks in at 10mb real and 800mb virtual.
iTerm 2 clocks in at 50mb real and 3gb virtual.
