Embed a scripting language

It would be awesome if iTerm supported the same perl extension api as rxvt-unicode so that scripts wouldn't have to be rewritten. A second best would be to extend iTerm with lua, nu, or some other scripting language (maybe AppleScript since some of the desired access is already in place).
Among the important features are user-definable selection rules (via perl regexes), selection munging, and contextual menus based on selection, as well as the ability to run arbitrary (but predefined) perl code from an escape sequence (sort of like the current growl notification). It can used to implement many other features on the list like rectangular and mouse-free selection
The homepage for rxvt-unicode is http://software.schmorp.de/pkg/rxvt-unicode.html
For an example of what can be done check out http://github.com/bartman/urxvt-scripts and http://github.com/jrockway/urxvt-pwsafe
I think it would be the killer feature.
