Rendering issues when using 256 color schemes in vim

What steps will reproduce the problem?
-
Set $TERM to xterm-256color.
-
Launch vim on a file with reasonably complex syntax highlighting (a lengthy vimrc works, as does pretty much any code samples longer than one screen).
-
Switch to a 256-color enabled colorscheme. (zenburn, xterm16, etc.)
In my test case, the screen redraws with the new color scheme, but only about halfway. The screen appears frozen until I enter ":" to drop to the vim command line. Occasionally I'll be allowed to page forward and backward through a few screens before the terminal appears to stop responding.
If I switch back to a 16 color scheme, everything returns to normal.
I'm confident this is not a vim problem, as this behavior only appeared on recent iterm2 builds.
