iTerm2 uses excessive CPU when attached to tmux session

Detailed steps to reproduce the problem:
- ssh to remote linux host (Fedora 30)
- attach tmux session "tmux -CC attach -d" (tmux-2.9a-2.fc30.x86_64)
- CPU usage spikes on the client system to ~%107
What happened: The tmux session in question has only four tabs, however one of the tabs has a long running process that has output a lot of text.
Client CPU spikes to ~%107 and stays there after attaching tmux session.
What should have happened:
CPU usage should have gone down after loading tmux session.
