Wide characters are clipped

What steps will reproduce the problem?
-
Start a terminal with both fonts set to Monaco 12 and "Treat ambiguous-width characters as double width" checked.
-
Run perl -e 'print("\342\230\205\342\236\234\n");'
What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Expected: star followed by arrow (★➜) without clipping.
Actual: the arrow is clipped.
If instead the terminal is has "Treat ambiguous-width characters as double width" unchecked, both characters are clipped.

Increasing the spacing of the characters in the font selection window helps to fix this, but is not ideal. If some characters are too wide for the character spacing, perhaps they should just overlap adjacent characters.
