Detailed steps to reproduce the problem:
- Try to press Alt/"Option"+X
- Watch ≈ appear instead.
- Oops.
What happened:
Alt/"Meta"+x is used in Emacs to enter commands by name. It doesn't work in iTerm2 because iTerm2 emulates Apple Terminal's behavior of interpreting the "Option" key locally as a way to enter Unicode characters. The remote program never sees that Alt was pressed, and instead of an Alt key combination ends up getting a Unicode character. This makes programs accessed on Linux from iTerm2 harder to use.
What should have happened:
The Alt key should work like it does on Linux and Windows.
