Mapping these to italic was short-sighted. I made the decision
consciously, knowing how LaTeX deals with emph, trying to be more
explicit. I think I was likely really just being lazy, not wanting to
deal with that in the Markdown output format I was working on.

Better to support the LaTeX behavior and have the Markdown be incomplete
in its handling.
