MacOS menu bar badge numbers do not disappear after viewing unread messages

Problem Description

When a followed channel has new, unread messages, the menu bar Gitter symbol turns green and has a number associated with the number of followed channels with unread messages. If you click on the unread channel through the menu bar, the messages in the channel change from green (unread) to their standard coloring (read). However the notification does not clear on the menu bar.

Expected Behavior

Upon being notified of unread messages in a followed channel in the menu bar, the user should be able to go to that channel by clicking the unread channel in the menu bar application (this works), and then once the messages have transitioned from unread to read, this notification number in the menu bar should decrement (does not happen).

If I then click out of this channel to another channel in the application, and then go back to the channel in question, the notification does update like I expect. It seems like going to the channel from the menu bar application does not register as the user actually inspecting that channel, thus not updating the notification symbol. This is further supported based on the sentence above this.
