Labels in issue boards
What’s this issue all about?
The displaying of labels on issue boards. We have two proposals to de-clutter the issue boards a bit.
Research Objective
The primary outcome of this research will be a better understanding of how users are currently managing labels, especially in boards, and what could be improved about their experience. We also aim to find out whether any of the 3 solutions address the concerns brought up by users. We'll get feedback on what is successful or unsuccessful in the design proposals too. It will be a question of which of the 3 designs would be useful in their workflow, if any.
What questions are you trying to answer?
- How are users managing labels in issue boards?
- How do users feel about the way labels are displayed in issue board cards?
- What do they like or dislike and why?
- How do users feel about the way labels are displayed in issue board cards?
Essentially, would users find these proposals be helpful?
- For option 1, is it confusing that the main list label isn't displayed on each card?
- For option 2, would users use this toggle often? Or would they choose all or nothing and simply keep it in that state for the majority of the time?
- The original issue list redesign included a "collapsed label" state. The label colors would remain but the text would disappear, saving a bit of vertical space. We received feedback internally that this would not be a useful feature, which led me to the
Show/hide labels toggle
. I'd like to see what other users think of this proposal
What assumptions do you have?
- That some users find the issue boards too cluttered
- They have to scroll pretty far vertically in a list to see the issues they're looking for because the labels take up so much space
What decisions will you make based on the research findings?
Specific actions: If users don't find the missing label from Option 1 confusing, we should definitely remove the list label from each card, as its taking up unnecessary space.
For the toggle, I suppose if the overwhelming majority would prefer one specific state (either no labels or all labels), then we need to rethink the toggle idea. If users like the idea of being able to see both states, then we're on the right track with the toggle design.
What's the latest milestone that the research will still be useful to you?
%12.2 (The toggle is scheduled to be implemented in %12.3
