Getting to a project requires getting to a specific group first
What’s this issue all about?
Created from https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/ux-research/-/issues/1169
Users shared current ways of navigating to a project using search, breadcrumb, and the group/subgroup page.
The goal of these methods of getting to a specific group is to get to the desired project.
Each of the current ways of navigating could be improved to optimize the path to get to a specific project.
From the solution validation 5/5 participants liked the breadcrumb navigation in solution validation. However it is not certain if we should be changing breadcrumbs because it will introduce another mental model/behaviour that will make GitLab more confusing over time.
Will explore potential solutions could be to improve the navigation between projects
Ideas
- Make better use of the “Project overview” to show relevant links or list of recent actions (an extension of the “Create MR” functionality). At the moment it is basically a copy of the “Repository” page
- Allow users to configure which page they want to land on if available when switching projects
- Make projects and group listing pages easier to navigate. If you have 6 subgroups and there is a project under the 6th it is hard to get because of the expand/collapse tree interface.
