Why do users select CE over EE?

What’s this issue all about?

We'd like to better understand why users are choosing CE over EE, when installing GitLab.

Who is the target user of the feature?

Self-managed administrators.

What questions are you trying to answer?

• Do you know what edition of GitLab you are operating?
• Did you intentionally select the edition?
• If so, which did you pick?
• Why did you select that edition?

The answers listed above I think are the core questions, fundamentally trying to understand why a user selected CE over EE. This is interesting to us as we are trying to improve the rate of EE adoption, but we see for example 50% of users selecting CE when using our helm charts. (EE is the default there)

What hypotheses and/or assumptions do you have?

We think they are purposefully choosing CE because they are worried that EE will either be crippled or bothersome when not paid for.

What decisions will you make based on the research findings?

Determine how to better address user concern on utilizing EE. This could be making the in-app messaging on paid features friendlier, or better addressing concerns in our documentation.
