Redesigning the Status Page
Comparing GitHub's Status page, Bitbucket's Status page, and GitLab.com's Status Page, I wanted to note a few places we're lacking:
- Longer load times
- Larger page load
- We don't have our logo displayed prominently
- We don't have a "History" section (other than the Twitter feed)
- No "Last updated X time ago" text
- No granular control of graph data (e.g. Last 24 hours, Last 7 days, Last 30 days)
- No prominent "Site is up"/"Site is down" banner for immediate communication.
Some solutions to the aforementioned problems:
- Remove the embedded Twitter feed. We can make a prominent link to it, but quite a bit of the page load is because of scripts loaded by Twitter.
- Remove Bootstrap, use a simple custom design. This'd save on page load since Bootstrap is a bit overkill here.
- Use the GitLab color scheme and take some general design cues from the Home page redesign.
- Maybe roll our own graph JavaScript instead of using one provided by Google?
We should also make sure the Status page is linked from the Home Page Footer once it gets redesigned.
We may, potentially, want to use StatusPage.io instead of a custom-built page, but $29/month for the cheapest plan is a bit much for what's being offered IMO.
Thoughts?
