Eyeballs/presence/status not working properly

The eyeballs/presence/status that shows the offline/online status does not seem to be working properly.

The avatar seams to be marked as online only when the user is currently typing the message to you and otherwise it's marked as offline. Showing the user only only while he/she is typing is not helpful and you can't differentiate if a profile is online (actually signed into Gitter) or not online (not signed in and they will probably miss your message -> wait for email notification).
