Start embedded YouTube player at specified point in video
Use Case: When in a conversation, it is not uncommon to use images or videos to reference something. Sometimes the thing you are referencing in a video isn't immediately shown, so you'll want to skip the first several minutes.
With YouTube there is a URL parameter that lets you set the start position of the video. Here are some valid YouTube URL's that all link to the same video at the same point
- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEjGQB9BKWA&t=1m16s
- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEjGQB9BKWA&t=76s
- http://youtu.be/aEjGQB9BKWA?t=1m16s
- http://youtu.be/aEjGQB9BKWA?t=76s
When embedded YouTube accepts a different parameter
<iframe src="https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/aEjGQB9BKWA?start=76"></iframe>
The start
parameter only takes a number value for the amount of seconds to skip. So URL's using minute/second values will need to be manually converted (from t=1m16s
to start=76
)
Also note that Gitter is currently using the normal embed url:
But YouTube offers a non-tracking embed URL. So users can watch video's on your site without their habits being monitored by a third party.
In general it's best to err on the side of your user's privacy.
