Usage data strategy
We need usage data, but aside from the technical complexities, there’s a challenge in that self-managed users/customers can opt out of usage pings. We need to turn this around and deliver value to the customer such that they want to enable usage pings. A lot of the things our sales, marketing, and product orgs want to know, admins want to know as well. Let’s help them.
Some ideas:
- Web portal for administering your licenses so you never have to manually install a license again.
- Web portal for backing up and restoring your GitLab configuration, and possibly data, to the cloud, centrally managed by GitLab, making it easy to move, clone, and sync installations.
- Web portal with sophisticated analytics about your GitLab instance usage. e.g. understand how much of the product your users are using, which features are getting most use, are people really using those Ultimate features?
