Cannot use HTTP/S clone URL without .git
Summary
When using git version 1.8.3.1 (CentOS) users cannot use .git-less remote URLs for cloning
Steps to reproduce
- Try to clone with
1.8.3.1:git clone https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab-ce
Cloning into 'gitlab-ce'...
error: RPC failed; result=22, HTTP code = 404
fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly- Try to clone with
2.5.0.1:git clone https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab-ce. This works.
From our own instance we can see the following errors:

Cannot use HTTP URL cloning without .git suffix.
What is the expected correct behavior?
It should redirect calls so cloning works as it did in the past.
