gitlab software version update notices, "update available" vs "update asap" - could be less frequent and/or convey less urgency ?
I guess this can be classed as a feature request, mixed with a minor rant. The feature request is that gitlab-ce software-update notices could be implemented better. This request a bit vague, however it's not my decision how they could be improved, but here's the back story:
I recently updated our gitlab-ce instance, roughly around mid-May, to the latest at the time, 11.10.4. And all was good. However, it seems that since on the 22nd of each month, a new point release is released, 11.11 soon after came out as expected. Our gitlab/help page (or the admin screen) showed update available
(which I'll admit, is a nice thing for it to inform us).
Today however I looked again, and the update available
now turned out to a scarier update ASAP
, which one would think conveys a sense of immediate urgency to hurry and upgrade! So I got to searching, manually (since as with many multi-year-old issues, gitlab-ce#17543 seems to not be going anywhere) and found that the latest version is.. still 11.11; Hmmmmm...
So I'm raising this issue to ask, what gives? Why is gitlab-ce scaremongering us, and telling us now to upgrade **ASAP **when last week it was merely just telling us an update is available, when the exact same version was out last week? Is it just a case of if if days_since_last_update > 2weeks: turn_scare_mode_on()
? i am not in the habbit of running .0 releases on production and being told that I need to update to such a release "ASAP" is a bit of an insult to my intelligence.
It would be nice whether the term ASAP is used, had to do with something like say, a critical security vulnerability. But this doesn't seem to be the case here (unless I'm missing something and there's been discovered such a bug in 11.10.4 since last week?), or if there was a customizable grace-period between when you go from "available" to "ASAP" if it has nothing to do what's already out, with a setting of more than say a few weeks passes or even, dare i say, a few months that the term ASAP is mentioned. I mean, I know you guys do very rapid software development on the gitlab-ce, but I kind of *like *the idea of an LTS versions, which don't require/hassle us to upgrade nearly every week, and that such version don't get nearly immediately disregarded as the ASAP term is soon thrown around.
Bottom line, maybe we as end-users of gitlab-ce don't want to update almost every week or face see this annoying ASAP reminder if we're trying to be cautious?
