## Goal
Remove Vue 2 as a dependency of `gitlab-org/gitlab`.
This issue lists the merge requests that lead there, in stages. Each stage says what is done, what is open, and what it waits for.
Removing `@vue/compat` (running Vue 3 without compatibility mode) is out of scope. It comes after this issue.
## Overview
Status on 2026-10-21.
| Stage | What it does | Required for the removal? | Status |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1. Independent fixes | Fix what the Vue 3 compiler and runtime break, one MR each | Only the "Required" groups | Required groups: all merged except https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263821 and https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263808 |
| 2. Vue 3 compiler in CI | Run the `vue3` CI jobs with the Vue 3 template compiler | Yes | https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263251, pipeline green, waits for https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263821 |
| 3. One page, two runtimes | Run `main` on Vue 3 while a page runs on Vue 2 | Only if we roll out first |
| 4. Roll out the flags | Turn on every `vue3_migrate_*` flag on GitLab.com | Only if we roll out first | 85 of 100 flags fully on |
| 5. Remove Vue 2 | The removal MR, modelled on the POC | Yes | Not started. The POC pipeline is green. |
| 6. Clean up | Remove the dual-build code and old libraries | No, it comes after | Partly drafted |
The open question below decides whether stages 3 and 4 are needed.
### The current stack
The proof of concept (POC) https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263207 builds GitLab with no Vue 2. It sits on top of the MRs that stages 1 and 2 still need:
```mermaid
B["263251: Vue 3 compiler in CI (stage 2), one commit"] --> A
```
- The stack was rebased on 2026-10-21, after https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263855 and https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263806 merged. Every MR in the stack has a green pipeline:
- https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263821: https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/pipelines/2972105540
- https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263251: https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/pipelines/2972061185
- https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263207: https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/pipelines/2972081727, E2E on Omnibus and CNG and as-if-FOSS included
- When https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263821 merges, https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263251 is rebased onto `master` and keeps only its own commit.
### Next steps, in order
1. Merge https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263821 (stage 1).
1. Merge https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263251 (stage 2).
1. Merge https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263808 (stage 1). It needs a CI rules fix first, see stage 1.
1. Decide the open question: roll out first, or remove directly.
1. Open the stage 5 removal MR from the POC.
## Background
<details>
<summary>How Vue 2 and Vue 3 run on <code>master</code> today</summary>
- The bundler builds each module twice when code for both runtimes reaches it: once for Vue 2 and once for Vue 3 (`?vue3`). The loader is in `config/vue3migration/`.
- 384 entries have a `vue3_migration.yml`:
- 373 have `status: rollout`, behind a `vue3_migrate_*` feature flag.
- 11 have `status: migrated`.
- `main` still runs on Vue 2 on every page.
- `INFECTION_BLOCKLIST` in `config/vue3migration/aliases.js` keeps 6 modules on Vue 2 only, because they hold page-wide state.
- CI runs every frontend job twice: a Vue 2 job and a `vue3` job (`jest vue3`, `jest-with-fixtures vue3`, `compile-production-assets vue3`, and others).
- The `vue3` jobs use the Vue 2 template compiler until stage 2 merges. A GitLab without Vue 2 must use the Vue 3 compiler, because `vue-template-compiler` refuses to load with Vue 3 installed.
- `package.json` has the Vue 2 stack as the default and the Vue 3 stack under aliases (`@gitlab/vue-router-vue3`, `@gitlab/vuex-vue3`, `vue-loader-vue3`, `@vue/test-utils-vue3`).

<details>
<summary>What the proof of concept showed</summary>
https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263207 sets `VUE_VERSION=3` and the Vue 3 compiler everywhere, marks every `vue3_migration.yml` as migrated, and removes the Vue 2 packages. Results:
- It needs none of the dual-runtime MRs in stage 3. `VUE_VERSION=3` already sends every module, `main` included, through the Vue 3 aliases.
- It builds with webpack and rspack, and GDK pages work: jobs, merge request, work item with the rich text editor, pipeline.
- Most failures came from the Vue 3 template compiler, not from removing Vue 2. Stage 1 fixes them one MR at a time.
- System specs: the only failures were the labels dropdown bug that https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263248 fixed.
- E2E on CNG and on Omnibus pass. `release_with_glab_spec.rb` failed at first, on an empty input description `span`. https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263634 fixed the QA page object. E2E on Omnibus also needed the `-vue3` assets image tag suffix removed (stage 5).

### Stage 1: independent MRs
Each of these targets `master` and needs no other MR, except where a row says it is stacked. Merge them in any order.
**Required: tooling.** Each fixes a tool that depends on Vue 2 without saying so.
| MR | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263239 | Declares `chalk` as a production dependency. Production installs found it only through Vue 2 packages such as `vue-apollo`. |
| https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263240 | Keeps the aliased Vue packages in the external import group for ESLint. |
| https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263245 | Extracts gettext strings with the Vue 3 compiler. Same 22,802 messages. |
**Required: Vue 3 compiler fixes.** Stage 2 needs all of these, or the `vue3` jobs fail.
| MR | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263243 | Compiles `gl-emoji` as an element, and removes the `gl-emoji` stubs from 29 specs. |
| https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263534 | Keeps the `:key` on the children of elements with `v-for`. |
| https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263248 | Fixes the legacy labels dropdown: a click on a label threw with the Vue 3 compiler. |
| https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263255 | Rewrites 8 specs that depended on whitespace between elements. |
| https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263256 | Fixes the pipeline header when there is no pipeline. |
| https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263855 | Updates `@gitlab/ui` to 138.7.0. With https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab-services/design.gitlab.com/-/merge_requests/6527 and https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab-services/design.gitlab.com/-/merge_requests/6541, `GlNavItem` and `GlLink` no longer resolve `router-link` when they do not use it. Without it, the super sidebar specs fail. |
| https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263806 | Registers the policy components in the CE branch rule. The Vue 3 compiler resolves every component in a template, even one behind a false `v-if`. Without it, the as-if-FOSS `jest vue3` jobs fail. |
| https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263634 | QA: finds an empty catalog input description when it is hidden. |
| https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263821 | Fixes three specs for the Vue 3 compiler. The shared SFC spec now compiles its fixtures with the Vue 2 compiler, so it still tests the `@vue/compat` patch for SFCs that both runtimes share. Split out of https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263251. |
| https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263808 | Builds Storybook with Vue 3. Stage 5 breaks Storybook without it. Its `test-storybook` job needs the frontend fixture jobs, and their rules do not match a change to `storybook/**/*` only. That rules bug on `master` needs its own small MR. |
**Vue 3 runtime fixes.** Real bugs, but no job fails without them.
| MR | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/262834 | Accepts a `span` as the milestone popover target. |
| https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/262833 | Saves the picked iteration cadence start date in any time zone. |
| https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/262831 | Binds the summarize loading state in the review drawer without `v-model`. |
| https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/260779 | Stops issuable navigation after `visitUrl` when the list has no full path. |
| https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263311 | Bumps `@gitlab/at.js` to 1.5.11, which fixes a `null` query error in autocomplete. |
| https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/262368 | Fixes the top browser console errors in feature specs. |
**Jest harness.** No job fails without them.
| MR | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/262818 | Skips `false` props when the Vue 3 Jest stubs render. |
| https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/262855 | Scopes intentional prop warnings in six specs, so the global ignore can go (https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/work_items/634251). |
| https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/262828 | Marks the hand-built echarts mock in `bar_list_chart_spec.js` raw, as `GlChart` emits it. Removes 18 Vue 3 prop warnings. https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab-services/design.gitlab.com/-/merge_requests/6534 does not remove them, because the spec stubs `GlChart`. |
**Directive cleanup.** No job fails without them. This is a stack, so merge in this order:
1. https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/262744: removes unused `GlTooltip` directive registrations (CE).
1. https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/262745: the same for EE.
1. https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/262746: adds the `local-rules/vue-no-unused-directives` ESLint rule.
**Optional.** Each replaces private Vue reactivity flags (`__v_*`) with the public API.
| MR | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263541 | Uses `markRaw()` and `isRef()` instead of `__v_skip` and `__v_isRef`. |
| https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab-services/design.gitlab.com/-/merge_requests/6534 | `@gitlab/ui`: marks the `GlChart` echarts instance raw with `markRaw()`. In 138.7.0. |
| https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab-services/design.gitlab.com/-/merge_requests/6535 | `@gitlab/ui`: `GlFilteredSearch` unwraps token components with `toRaw()`. In 138.6.3. |
| https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263559 | Removes the `markRaw()` calls around filtered search token components. Can go ahead now that `master` has 138.7.0. |
### Stage 2: run the Vue 3 compiler in CI
- https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263251: sets `VUE_COMPILER_VERSION=3` for the `vue3` jobs and fixes rspack with `vue-loader` 17. It also reads the Vue version in one place. It is one commit, stacked on https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263821.
Its pipeline is green: https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/pipelines/2972061185. Its earlier failures were fixed by https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263855 and https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263806.
**Depends on:** the required groups in stage 1. If its pipeline finds more failures, open an MR for each and add it to stage 1.
After this MR, the `vue3` jobs test what a Vue 2-free GitLab runs, and new Vue 3 compiler problems show up in the MR that causes them.
### Stage 3: one page, two runtimes
Needed only if we roll out before we remove Vue 2 (see the open question). These MRs make it safe to run `main` on Vue 3 while a page runs on Vue 2. This is a stack, so merge in this order:
1. https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/262801: shares page-wide state between the Vue 2 and Vue 3 copies, and clears `INFECTION_BLOCKLIST`.
1. https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263173: fails the build when a new module with page-wide state gets two copies.
1. https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/261499: moves `main` to Vue 3 behind `vue3_migrate_main`.
Independent of the stack:
- https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263183: reads sidebar assignees from the store in `@` autocomplete, not from `SidebarMediator.singleton`.
### Stage 4: roll out the flags
Needed only if we roll out first.
- https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/261154: puts every remaining page entry and global bundle behind `vue3_migrate_final_sweep`. Rollout: https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/work_items/633141.
- Enable each `vue3_migrate_*` flag on GitLab.com, including `vue3_migrate_main` (stage 3) and `vue3_migrate_final_sweep`.
- Close each rollout issue. On 2026-10-21, 85 of the 100 flags were fully enabled on GitLab.com, but 55 of those 85 still had an open rollout issue. The other 15 flags were at a percentage of actors, at 50%, or never set.
To finish a flag, one MR sets its entries to `status: migrated` and deletes the flag definition. The two steps cannot be split: a `migrated` entry has no `feature_flag` key, and `scripts/feature_flags/used-feature-flags` counts a `vue3_migrate_*` flag as used only through that key, so `rspec:feature-flags` fails in between.
**Depends on:** stage 3 for `vue3_migrate_main`. Stage 2 should merge first, so the flags roll out code that the Vue 3 compiler already tested.
### Stage 5: remove Vue 2
Use https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263207 as the template. On top of stages 1 and 2, the POC has these commits:
1. Build and test with Vue 3 by default: the `VUE_VERSION` and `VUE_COMPILER_VERSION` defaults, and `.gitlab/ci/version.yml`.
1. Set every `vue3_migration.yml` to `status: migrated`.
1. Remove the Vue 2 packages and their patches. Keep `vue-resize` and `vue-observe-visibility`, because the vendored `vue-virtual-scroller` imports them. This commit also deletes the shared SFC spec and its fixtures, because they mount the Vue 2 runtime next to Vue 3.
1. Give `@vue/test-utils` 2 its real name.
1. Allow the `vue` mock in `spec/frontend/__mocks__/vue` to re-export the aliased `vue`.
1. Delete the unused `vue3_migrate_*` feature flags, and expect no rollout entries in `spec/lib/gitlab/vue3_migration_spec.rb`. Four flags stay, because controllers still read them.
1. Build Storybook with Vue 3. This goes away when https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263808 merges.
1. Drop the `-vue3` suffix from the assets image tag in `scripts/utils.sh`. Otherwise, with Vue 3 as the default, the E2E on Omnibus pipeline waits for an image tag that `build-assets-image` never pushes.
Still to do in the removal MR, not in the POC yet:
- Remove the Vue version checks. On `master`, these 5 files have one, and each branch behaves differently in the two runtimes, so none can go earlier:
- `vue_shared/spa/components/router_view_with_slot.js`
- `spec/frontend/repository/router_spec.js`
- `spec/frontend/lib/utils/confirm_via_gl_modal/confirm_action_spec.js`
- `spec/frontend/__helpers__/set_vue_error_handler.js`
- `spec/frontend/vue_shared/vue_virtual_scroll_list_vue3_spec.js`
- If we remove directly: remove the `vue3-rollout` (Omnibus) and `cng-vue3-rollout` (CNG) E2E canary jobs in the same MR, because they enable `vue3_migrate_jobs`. https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263807 had this change and is closed.
**Depends on:** stages 1 and 2. If we roll out first, stage 4 too.
### Stage 6: clean up
Not needed for the removal. No MR covers these yet, except where noted:
1. Remove the dual-build code: `config/vue3migration/`, the infection scanner and its CI check, `?vue3` imports, `lib/gitlab/vue3_migration.rb`, the `.vue3` entry lookup, and every `vue3_migration.yml`.
1. Delete the remaining `vue3_migrate_*` flags and the code that reads them: controllers, QA specs, CI variables.
1. Remove the duplicated `vue3` CI jobs, such as `compile-production-assets vue3`. With Vue 3 as the default, they build exactly what the default jobs build.
1. Remove the `Vue.extend` calls (https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/work_items/634479). `@vue/compat` supports `Vue.extend`, so removing Vue 2 does not need this. These MRs cover every call in `app` and `ee/app`:
- https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263813: the wiki table of contents.
- https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263814: the suggestion diffs in notes.
- https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/263816: the global popovers (`~/popovers`).
- https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/256065: the issuable popovers, by another author.
1. Forward listeners on a plain `<router-view>` (https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/work_items/635420). Our global compat config removes them on Vue 3, so components use `RouterViewWithSlot` instead. The workarounds work, so removing Vue 2 does not need this. https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/264202 fixes `RouterView` in the router shim and removes four workarounds.
1. Declare smart query keys in `data()` and remove the `@gitlab/vue-no-undef-apollo-properties` disables (https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/work_items/635422). On Vue 3, `@vue/apollo-option` v4 starts an undeclared key as `null`, where vue-apollo v3 started it as `undefined`. This is already true on every page that runs on Vue 3, and removing Vue 2 makes it true on every page. We fix the components, not the shim (https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/264200 is closed). A codemod declares `key: undefined` at the 55 sites where that cannot change behaviour:
- https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/264208: 36 sites in CE.
- https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/264209: 19 sites in EE.
The other 57 disables need a manual look or a lint rule fix. The issue lists them.
1. Stop smart subscriptions from restarting after every error (https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/work_items/635424). On Vue 3, `@vue/apollo-option` v4 restarts a failed subscription, so a permanent error loops. vue-apollo v3 stops it. This is already true on every page that runs on Vue 3. No `$subscribe` user depends on the restart. https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/264164 fixes the vue-apollo shim. Afterwards, the local retry counter in `editor_wrapper.vue` (security policies) can go.
1. Guard `v-model` on async children with a `model` option (https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/work_items/635421). The `COMPONENT_V_MODEL` compat flag reads `model` from the `defineAsyncComponent` wrapper, which has none, so `v-model` binds `value` / `input`. No page is broken today, so removing Vue 2 does not need this. https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/merge_requests/264206 adds the `local-rules/no-async-component-with-model` ESLint rule and removes the two unused `model` options it found. The rule can be deleted when `COMPONENT_V_MODEL` is turned off.
1. Replace the Vue 2 libraries that still work through the aliases: `@tiptap/vue-2`, `@testing-library/vue` 5, `vuedraggable` 2, `vue-resize` and `vue-observe-visibility` (for the vendored `vue-virtual-scroller`), and `portal-vue` 2 (a dependency of `@gitlab/ui` and `@gitlab/duo-ui`).
1. Remove the `@vue/compat` patch for SFCs that both runtimes share, from commit https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/commit/74eaa347b283. Nothing shares an SFC once Vue 2 is gone.
1. Rewrite `doc/development/fe_guide/vue3_migration.md` and `doc/development/testing_guide/testing_vue3.md` for a Vue 3 only codebase.
## Open questions
- **Roll out first, or remove directly?** The POC shows that stage 5 works without stages 3 and 4. Rolling out first moves users to Vue 3 page by page and is easier to revert. Removing directly skips the dual-runtime work, but switches every page in one deploy.
- Which group owns stages 5 and 6?
