The Social sign-in section in user settings displays the available services under the title "Connected Accounts". This can be confusing when a user first starts using GitLab as they will most likely not have any accounts connected yet.

Each service is displayed in the style of a token, with the logo or name of the service on the left and a link to Connect or Disconnect on the right:

This section can get even more confusing if the user connects any SAML services, as those cannot be disconnected and are displayed with a non-interactive Active token:

The copy of this section is also confusing:

Proposal

This proposal is taken from the conversation in https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab-ee/issues/5016#note_116038252:

We can start by separating services that have already been connected from those that have not.

That would also give us the opportunity to have a different description for connecting vs. disconnecting:

  • Not connected yet:
    • Title: "Avaliable services"
    • Description: "Click ‘Connect’ to activate sign-in with one of the following services"
  • Already connected:
    • Title: "Connected accounts"
    • Description: "Click ‘Disconnect’ to deactivate sign-in with the services you’ve previously configured"

If there are no services to connect or no accounts have been set up yet, we would replace the description message:

  • Available services: "There are no available services to configure"
  • Connected accounts: "There are currently no connected accounts"

Some questions to answer

  • Should we be looking into a broader redesgin?
  • What is working in the current design?
  • What is not working?
  • What is lacking?
