Local package cache/proxy
One of the popular uses for an on-premise linux package repository, is it's ability to act as a local cache/proxy to the upstream official repositories. There are a few advantages of this:
- Save on internet traffic on your corporate network, by using a local cache
- In some cases internet connectivity may not be available broadly, so machines can point to this local server instead
- Similarly, a whitelist could be applied to restrict what packages and repos were available
