Address issues with UX of file tree browser close button

Context

Several users have left feedback about not being able to figure out how to close the file tree browser:

It took me a while to find out how to close the side bar, there was no clear indication how to do that. Takes a lot of space in a small laptop screen, closer to 50%.

The toggle button looks the same as an icon and a drop down menu.

I would just like to point out one UX confusion where I am not able to close this repository file tree with any button

It looks confusing and I need more space to read the file contents , but as I can read the threads below, we have the file tree toggle button 🙂 Maybe its just me , but it took me to read the threads below to see how I toggle the file tree 🙂

adding a 'x' or dismiss button would be great, I couldn't figure out how to close it at first! and it's a bit redundant when on the root page, as mentioned earlier.

For first time users, the file tree is opened for discoverability: &17781 (comment 2659364050). However, on smaller screens this can reduce the screen real estate of the main content for users. It can be confusing and frustrating to not know how to close the file tree.

At one point we had an X close button for the file tree browser, but it was removed due to redundancy with the file tree browser button: #569507 (comment 2851692695)

Design proposal

Consider whether or not the X close button should be placed back in. Or if we can explicitly call out the open/close function more clearly for first time users.
