Label subscriptions randomly disappear

Summary
I subscribe to a label to Receive notifications when a label is used. Two times in the last six months, this subscription was removed without me doing anything – at least I'm not aware of doing anything. To be clear, it's not that the subscription remains and emails for it stop working. When checking up on the project in question after not receiving the expected email, it was as if I had never subscribed to the label – I could / had to resubscribe.
The first time this happened I considered it a fluke, but when it happened a second time I mentioned it and several other Support team members reported having also experienced this multiple times. These occurrences do not happen at the same time – it happened to someone in the last seven days, but my subscription currently is still there.
The label in question has not been renamed or otherwise touched in years, as far as we are able to tell.
Steps to reproduce
- Subscribe to (project-level) label
- Wait
- Notice that you stop receiving emails
Example Project
The reason we can observe this well in Support is that we have the https://gitlab.com/gitlab-com/support/readiness/support-week-in-review project, where a weekly digest issue is created with the label in question – hence a lot of Support team members subscribe to this label to receive that issue via email. This weekly digest happens every week, without a break – so not receiving the email is notable.
