Security Use Case Vision
It is time to refresh the 3-year vision for the Security Use Case. The groups that build products for the Security Use Case span the Secure and Govern stage. We are going to prepare for this using a combination of asynchronous prep work and synchronous discussions/activities.
Date/Time
- July 9-11 - Probably 1 session/day so that people don't get burnt out
- Journey Lines will be 1-2 weeks in advance of the other sessions - we are going to hold this with all Sec Section PMs whereas the remainder of the sessions will only include Secure Stage PMs, Threat Insights, and Security policies.
Prep Work
Everyone will have a month to complete the prep work. Completion of artifacts will be due Wednesday June 26th so that people have a few days prior to the week of July 4th (big holiday week in the USA, lots of people will be OOO) to review.

Sync Sessions
- Journey Lines (~2hrs) - This is a team building exercise where everybody builds a journey line and shares it live with the group. Here is mine as an example. We did this last summer with the team and now 50% of us are new! So we want to repeat it. This is the only session that will include PMs who work on the Compliance Use Case. Additionally, we will probably hold this a couple weeks in advance.
- Competitive/Market Review (~2hr) - We will have all reviewed the competitive assessments in advance so that we can collectively discuss GitLab's strengths & weaknesses as well as market themes and direction. The outcome of this session is a clear picture of who our top competitors are as well as a map of the gaps that we have between them and ourselves. This could be a SWOT exercise where each PM performs a SWOT analysis on their assigned competitior. TBD
-
Vision Affinity Mapping (~2hrs) - This session will be done in a virtual sticky-note tool. We will answer a set of questions such as the ones below (WIP) and then we will create an affinity map and give labels to the groups that we create. The outcome of this session is our new 3-year vision themes that will be captured on the direction page.
- Why do we win deals today?
- Why will we win deals 3 years from now?
- Where do we need to focus in order to achieve that vision?
-
Strategy Session (~2hrs) - This session will also be done in a virtual tool. We will answer the following questions (WIP). The outcome of this session is the 3-year strategy section on the direction page.
- What are the big sticky problems that we need to solve?
- Are there new products that we want to expand our portfolio to offer?
- With that in mind...
- What do we build?
- What do we buy?
- Can we partner with anyone to accelerate the roadmap? Who, what, and where do they integrate?
- With that in mind...
