Confusing UX around renewing an open-source subscription
I see this banner at the top of an open-source project that I maintain.
Ah, right, this needs renewing every year. I click the blue "Renew subscription" button. It brings me to the Customers Portal.
I click the "I accept" checkbox, but the "Renew" button is still disabled, and the UI offers no clear next steps. So, the banner at the top of the project offers me a dead-end UX.
I open a new tab to https://docs.gitlab.com, search "renew open-source subscription", and the first two results look promising. Eventually I find a link to How does someone renew their membership in the GitLab for Open Soure Program?. (Ah, handbook.gitlab.com, not docs.gitlab.com.)
It seems like the in-app UX could guide open-source maintainers through the renewal process without getting stuck or needing to look up (out-of-band) how to complete that process. A minimal fix might be for the in-app banner to link to the How does someone renew? Handbook page, instead of linking to the Customers Portal.
This may be related to #413148 , but it's unclear what a fix for that issue would look like (i.e. whether it would remove sharp edges from the overall UX).
I appreciate GitLab's ongoing support for open-source software projects! You build a great product and we appreciate having use of it regardless.
