Problem to solve
Users consider Pipelines critical to their deployment infrastructure and would like to unit test the pipelines themselves so that they can verify the functional correctness of the pipelines.
Proposal
- A way to write and execute unit tests against the pipeline. (Jenkins offers a comparative feature https://github.com/jenkinsci/JenkinsPipelineUnit)
Complementary/Alternative Solutions
Gitlab offers features like Pipeline Simulation and Linting the CI Yaml file to help with pipeline testing. Also, see a potential workaround using Dynamic Child Pipelines.
Intended users
- Reduce the time it takes to do pipeline development.
- Instead of adding/modifying/trying out stages which can take minutes or even longer with each cycle (for example if you require output from upstream jobs or previous stages) you can just execute your unit test which runs within a few seconds
