Cells/Regions: Select low-CO2 regions/zones
Everyone can contribute. Help move this issue forward while earning points, leveling up and collecting rewards.
Release notes
With GitLab Cells/Regions, compute will be shifted to other datacenters and regions. We are prioritizing those with lowest grid CO2 footprint.
Problem to solve
Compute / electricity usage happening in high-CO2 regions.
Proposal (mostly copied from gitlab-org&6037)
Grid CO2 footprint should be the major decision criterion, to implement the linked item below.
Relatedly, we have:
- Looked into expanding into regions with very low CO2 emissions (see confidential comment below)
- Moved a part of our Runner fleet into a less polluting region: gitlab-com/gl-infra/production-engineering#23598 (closed)
- Announced setting GHG reduction plans & targets.
Intended users
GitLab's infrastructure admins. Because it could be a nice addition to release notes, I've created the issue here for now, but moving to gl-infra seems sensible as well.
