Unicode NO-BREAK SPACE in Markdown

I'd like to use a non-breaking space in a GitHub README.md. I could use either

  • the HTML &nbsp; (> <) or
  • a literal Unicode U+00A0, (> <).

Right now, the first works, but not the second. That's a little weird as other Unicode characters, like the FIGURE SPACE (> <) or the NARROW NO-BREAK SPACE (> <) do work.
