Ensure test coverage for all paths in the trials_controller

Summary

Before we can take on the rest of the items in &10009 (closed) we have to ensure we have test coverage for all permutations and paths in the trials_controller

Plan

Analyze current tests and if there is missing test coverage, create it.

some of the other issues can cover/overlap this work as well and this issue shouldn't necessarily block them.
