Getting started with Terraform

Problem Statement

As a DevOps engineer, in order to start using Terraform for my IaC projects, I would like a smooth getting started "wizardly" experience.

Current market shares of IaC are hard to guess, but analysts usually put it around 20-35% (source?), and we expect it to increase.

Making it easy to get started with GitLab will lead more developers to start their Terraform journey with us. Out of which more business is expected.

Current ideas for the solution are:

  • provide a GitLab managed Terraform state
  • provide a serverless / gitlab page to start a new infrastructure project with an initial terraform state, Auto DevOps and merge trains set up
