Number of commits and activity log not updated

I am using Gitlab 12.4.3 (4d477238500) installed from source (not a new installation, but upgraded from earlier releases), and since some time Gitlab does not update the number of commits of a project any more. For example right now I have a test project for which it shows "1 commit", however when you click on that link you see there are 3 commits. Pushing a new commit and waiting 15 minutes, does not change anything, it always stays at 1 commit. Also the Activity page is never updated and stays empty.
