ElasticSearch with AWS getting throttled

A customer has ElasticSearch enabled and is seeing that search results can take an average of 45 seconds to return. After getting the gitlab-profiler output (see the files in the ticket above) here's what we're seeing:
Each of the collapsed Modules has similar output. It looks like we're trying to resolve the AWS credentials and getting throttled because we do this for each module. Maybe we should cache the credentials we get back from AWS?
