Make it easier to exit the editor and return to previous page
Insight
It is not obvious for many users how to effectively exit the editor and return to the previous page they were on.
Supporting evidence
In the Q1FY23 Create stage benchmarking study, many users struggled to find a way to exit the web IDE, and the most common way (by clicking on the project title in the upper left), forced user to spend time navigating back to the page they were looking before entering the editor.
I couldn't find a really quick and easy way to get out of the web IDE once I was done making my changes or to just segue directly into the merge request from the commit...I relied on clicking on the link, but I kind of thought there would have been some other menu options that would have brought me back to the page that I opened it from. – S-07

Make the controls for exiting the web IDE more obvious and return users to the page they entered from (6 votes)
Solution
Implementation Guide
- Add "go back" button in sidebar
- Will go back to the referring URL page
- If the user navigated directly to the page then "go back" button will default to project overview page.
- Move the project avatar and name to fill up top area of sidebar
- Clicking on the project avatar header area takes you to project overview (same as current behaviour)
- Assumption with design: left sidebar is not collapsible at the moment so not designing how project avatar works when left sidebar is not visible
