Web IDE should open projects not hosted at GitLab

Problem to solve

Not all users who may be users of our Web IDE will be using GitLab to host their project. Currently the Web IDE only works with projects hosted at GitLab.

Intended users

  • Sasha (Software Developer)
  • Devon (DevOps Engineer)

Further details

Sometimes users may need to contribute to a project that's not hosted at GitLab. In order to support these users the Web IDE should be able to clone the project and open it in the Web IDE.

This is potentially a low hanging fruit addition, and would be more an awareness thing to let people know this is possible. It will be important to involve UX in the discovery of this.

Proposal

The Web IDE need should have an entry point so that a URL to a remote repository can be accessed and the repository cloned so changes can be made.

What does success look like, and how can we measure that?

Initial success should be based around usage of the Web IDE. Particularly for this, some percentage of Web IDE usage should be based on remote repositories. Initially only 1% of usage would be remote repositories.
