Problem Statement
More and more teams are adopting lean development practices along with DevOps. A lot of research was done for the 2017 State of DevOps Report that indicated teams that were using lean product management techniques along with continuous delivery experienced the following benefits over teams that were not:
- 46x increase in deployment frequency
- 440x faster lead time for changes
- 96x faster mean time to recover (MTTR)
- 5x lower change failure rate
- 2x increase in operating efficiency
- 2x increase in customer satisfactions
- 2x increase in achieving org goals
Right now, there are some existing competitors in this space:
- LeanStack markets itself as a "continuous innovation platform"
- Strategyzer provides business modeling and the facilitation of "innovation sprints"
The essence of the current problem from which this issue arose:
- As we are working on improving our process as a product team, we've introduced a new product development flow that requires a problem validation step.
- We're currently using an Opportunity Canvas in Mural, which works but does not provide a great experience in many respects.
- Using an Issue Template is really clunky.
- There was a proposal to build the Opportunity Canvas as a first class feature within GitLab.
Market landscape:
- Building this solution within GitLab aligns with the general market direction and would support teams in their transition to better product management processes. If integrated natively into GitLab, it has the opportunity to provide a fairly large value add.
Potential Value

Reach
The primary user target would be UX Designers and Product managers initially. The likely buyer is most likely a Director or Executive.
3.0
Impact
Right now, 1.0 as most organizations are not effectively using lean product management techniques. They should be...and if they were, the impact would be 3.0
Confidence
100%. Companies are trying to transition from "project" to "product", but don't know how. A recent customer visit said they just replaced everyone's titles without improving or changing any of their processes. Most companies don't realize how badly they need these sorts of tools and practices, so while the confidence is high, this would be a longer term play as it will require a lot of education within the market.
