Beta testing group for Advanced Global Search on GitLab.com

As we plan to rollout Advanced Global Search (supported by Elasticsearch) to all paying customers &1736 (closed) it will be safer to start with a smaller number of users to see what new challenges might exist.

After we feel more confident we'll determine a roll out plan to more paying groups.

What is the feature called?

Advanced Global Search, Documentation: https://docs.gitlab.com/ee/user/search/advanced_global_search.html

What does the feature do?

Advanced Global Search provides the capabilities of elasticsearch to global search. Primarily by enabling Advanced Global Search users will have the ability to perform cross-project code searches and have support for Advanced Syntax Search.

How can users find the feature in GitLab?

When performing a global search in GitLab that is scoped to the users group they'll see an additional piece of text that Advanced Global Search is enabled. During this period Advanced Global Search will only be work inside of enabled groups.

Enabling of the feature is currently controlled at a global level by instance administrators so users will have no access. We're working to enable individual users to disable Advanced Global Search on a per search basis. Details: #33678 (closed)

Who is the feature aimed at?

Advanced Global Search is primarily aimed at organizations who have more comprehensive search needs or do lots of inner-sourcing between projects.

What license/pricing tier does a user need to have in order to use the feature?

Starter

In what milestone do you plan to release the feature?

Please see this epic for more details. We're currently working to begin rolling out to a small number of users in %12.5.

What questions do you want to ask users?

Primarily we're looking to learn more about the backend systems and how they respond to increased load and operations of groups as we continue to expand usage. We'll also be interested in learning if the results (particularly code results) are more relevant and valuable to users.
