Inconsistencies between markdown preview in the Web IDE and actual visualization

Description of the problem

When something like this:

*<text>/othertext*

is written the result is the same in both the Web IDE and actual visualization (text vanishes), but when escapes are used

*\<text\>/othertext*

the Web IDE preview will show text and actual visualization won't

This may be related with issue gitlab-com/support-forum#4211
