Instrument left sidebar for tracking

Problem to solve

We need to understand how people are using the left sidebar in order to make better decisions about the structure, organization, and interaction patterns.

Proposal

We should track the number of unique users who click on the menu item.

Originally we thought we should track click events on the sidebar along with properties about the presentation and destination. However tracking the individual click event could result in a lot of data that would not be leveraged for marking product decisions.

Expected clicks to track is on the menu item then slice that data to learn whether the menu was clicked from a fly-out or expanded state.

The naming is rough here, but something like:

Event: sidebar_item_clicked Display: collapsed flyout or expanded Source: issues_list

Open questions

  • Is this event going to result in an unmanageably high volume of data? Is there a way to consolidate this?
