Retain MR linkage through Issue --> Epic Promotion?

If I create an issue, create a merge request from that issue, then promote the issue to an epic:

• the issue is closed and linked to the new Epic
• the MR remains open and linked to the closed issue
• the new Epic is not directly linked to the MR

Is that functioning as planned, or would we want to assign the MR to the newly created Epic?
