Add organizational affiliations to all user listings—merge request user suggestion overlays, search results, etc.
Problem to solve
Organizational affiliations are not currently listed in user-suggestion overlays or search results, so one must click through to user profiles to find them. This can be unclear and time-consuming when there are multiple users with similar names or handles and even more challenging when there are users with multiple accounts, such as work accounts and personal accounts.
Adding organizational affiliation would add clarity, save time, and possibly reduce frustration during those times, but I have no idea how often those times actually happen.
Intended users
This is intended for anyone using user-suggestion overlays or general GitLab search to find users.
Further details
I can use my own GitLab accounts as a case study. When I joined GitLab I created a second account for work, resulting in user suggestion menus looking like the following:
My work account profile did indeed display my organizational affiliation:
As a work-around to the organization not being displayed in suggestion menus and search results I added "(Work Account)" and "(Personal Account)" to the name fields in my GitLab settings and I added the GitLab tanuki to my work account profile picture, so merge request filtering and search results now look like the following:
Proposal
If the user has specified an organization, add it to suggestion menus and search results.
Permissions and Security
I don't know of any permissions or security ramifications.
Documentation
I don't think this feature would actually require any documentation, but it could be mentioned in other documentation that mentions suggestion menus or search results.
Testing
More information may require more display space, so there could be layout considerations such as unintentional overflow or wrapping.
What does success look like, and how can we measure that?
If the user has specified an organization, it is displayed in suggestion menus and search results.
What is the type of buyer?
