Problem to solve
- A maintainer of a software project who wants to use the CI/CD feature of gitlab needs to know the tags of the available runners and their meaning.
- Also an administrator of some local gitlab installation would like to have some guideline to assign Tags to gitlab runners before inventing total new Tags.
Following the description in https://docs.gitlab.com/ee/api/runners.html , in is already possible to get the list of available Tags. But this does not. But this still does not give the meaning of the Tags. For example means the tag docker that the runner runs docker images or is it able to generate docker images?
Intended users
As written above, this feature is intended for maintainers, who setup a .gitlab-ci.yml file. For example of a C/C++ project, which includes some build job executed on a runner which is capable of comiling with MSVC 2017 and cmake, ... This person needs to know which tags to choose.
On the other hand, the administrator, who setups the runner on this machine.
Further details
The current solution (workaround) is, that the administrator setups a wiki page which provides a list of runners tags and their meaning as invented by him. Unfortunally there is no such page for the runners tag of gitlab.com .
Proposal
Please provide an overview page, which could be setup / maintained by the administrator to provide a list of available gitlab-runners Tags and their meaning.
Nice to have: The creation of a runner with a new Tags could also update this list. But this would be step 2.
Permissions and Security
- The administrator should have the write permission to setup such an overview page.
- Each registered developer should have read access to this page.
Documentation
Testing
What does success look like, and how can we measure that?
- For gitlab.com exists an overview page which lists the available runners Tags and describes their meaning.
- For selfhostzed instances of gitlab the administrator could edit such a page.
