Provide tip in Pages Settings to add url to the project description

Problem to solve

Projects that utilize pages are often geared specifically for that purpose, but currently there is not much of a connection between the project UI and page that gets generated. The only link to the site is on the settings page. As part of the Experience Baselines and Recommendations initiative, it was demonstrated that this can lead to difficulty in finding the url. A more visible and upfront link would create a better connection to the project and the page it produces. Adding a link to the generated site in the project description puts the URL on the forefront of the project detail page and also in the project list view. Many of our template/example page projects follow this pattern. Users may not be aware, take the time to, or keep up to date this link manually.

Intended users

Users with projects that use any static website generator or plain HTML that wish to leverage GitLab pages.

Proposal

On pages setting provide an info message letting the user know about the benefits of adding the url to the project description.

  • Add info message
    • Tip: Adding your page domain url to the project description will make it visible on the projects and project details views.
    • Link (description) to: /edit
