Epic "Roadmap" tab does not render a roadmap for epics without sub-epics

Problem to solve

The "Roadmap" tab in the Epic page renders a roadmap when the epic contains sub-epics:

When the epic does not contain sub-epic the roadmap creation screen is shown:

The messaging here is confusing to me. I don't have a child epic for a roadmap and so the suggestion "To view the roadmap, add a start or due date to one of the child epics." does not apply. In this case, I would have expected to be able to create a child epic but the "New Epic" button is generic.

Proposal

There are several things that could be done:

  • For Epics without a child epic hide the Roadmap tab
  • On the Roadmap tab offer the user to create a child-epic directly
  • Render an issue Roadmap (maybe not a good idea)

What does success look like, and how can we measure that?
