Currently, GitHub seems to be the biggest competitor to GitLab. Bitbucket is still a valid contender however. It may make strategic sense to have better ButBucket integration, specifically with regards to GitLab as CI/CD.

Currently, the only information in the docs to be found is a list of manual steps (https://docs.gitlab.com/ee/ci/ci_cd_for_external_repos/bitbucket_integration.html#using-gitlab-cicd-with-a-bitbucket-cloud-repository-premium) which is a good start.

However, the last step is where the first improvements could be made, adding CI pipeline steps to trigger the BitBucket webhooks is a bit ... lame. With the GitHub integration this is not needed, and all handled automatically by GitLab.

Strategically, having better integration puts GitLab's 'foot in the door'. BitBucket CI is .. marginal at best. Many things are simply not possible, so an alternative to the BitBucket pipelines is desired. Things like Travis and Circle CI are an option, but so is GitLab as CI. If integration is easier, and the far improved system that GitLab has is shown, migration of projects may become possible. This is already happening with GitHub integration.
