Lightroom / carousel design for images in an issue description

When you click an image in an issue description (or mr or epic), it opens the image in a new tab.

I (Victor) think that's okay and like the control and expectation. @ebrinkman thinks it's annoying. He suggested some alternative design, which I think is called a lightroom design. I googled that term and I just kept getting Adobe results. So maybe I'm misremembering. But I'm thinking of that design where there's a modal popup and there's a black background and the images can be navigated through one by one. Or maybe this is called a modal carousel design.
